For Refugee Week 2021, we were delighted to share the work of Georgia Kalkanis, who upon taking a photography workshop in Athens, Greece, ended up documenting the refugee camp at Ellinikon Airport in Athens from October 2016 to June 2017.

After befriending two refugee women, Kalkanis was able to enter the camp and document daily life. The photographs show hope, laughter, sadness but, most of all, the way normal life went on even in these extreme circumstances.

Additionally, we displayed textile work by Artivistas. Artivistas is a collective of local artists and activists who use visual arts and other creativity to express views and promote social change. The work exhibited brought refugee and asylum women together on a communal art project. It gave everyone involved, many of whom who did not speak English, a sense of community and belonging.
